March 2010 -- Filipino Wayne Dell Manuel from the University of the Philippines won the first Google Map Maker Global Competition.
Wayne, a 23-year-old "citizen cartographer" bested 700 other contestants. He is a software developer at the UP National Telehealth Center. He has almost 35,000 map edits.
Google map competition was aims to encourage users to map schools and universities, hospitals and clinics in their home countries. This will in turn help humanitarian organizations in delivering services and respond to crises in different countries by having easy access to accurate digital maps like Google Maps. Jennifer Mazzon is the Community Organizer for Google Maps.
Manuel said he will continue using and editing in Google Map Maker because there are still many unmapped areas in the Philippines. In 2008, he started using Google Map Maker in 2008 and initially edited streets and establishment in Tuguegarao and Baguio City. He then added a number of roads in Tarlac City, Angeles City, and Tacloban City.
Wayne Dell Manuel won US$50,000 donation from UNICEF for the Philippines. He added more than 1,500 qualifying map features and made hundreds of moderations in Google Map Maker. His edits were primarily of local public schools.
"I'm so excited to have won this global competition because it represents a win not just for me, but also for the Philippines," said Manuel.
